Managing your career means knowing what to focus on - and what not to!
It means being able to move beyond dragging the same old baggage along with you! Above all, it means knowing what work will best match your strengths, needs and values so that you can make the right choices at the right time. Are you managing your career?
Below are four key strategies to assist you to take charge of your career:
1. Self Assessment
We each have a unique combination of personality attributes, work preferences, talents, values and needs. In what roles and environments do you thrive? What are your unique talents? What is most important to you? Ask yourself these questions before you begin.
2. Know your age and stage
Our careers move through recognisable stages. Moving forward successfully means being aware of the ages and stages, and rising to the challenges of each stage. When you have underlying unresolved issues from an earlier career stage, it's all too easy to get stuck or to seek work that may no longer be appropriate or effective.
3. The past is the past
We can't change the past; we can only learn from it and move on. Sometimes, completing unfinished business can prepare you to achieve greater challenges. For others, recognising unfinished business allows us to reconnect with earlier talents.
4. Recognising time for change
Do you feel a nagging dissatisfaction with your work? Does your work feel predictable and each day a little like groundhog day? Are you bored? These may be signs that you are at a crossroads and ready to make a change. Take advantage of your feelings of dissatisfaction and identify what you need now. Avoid the temptation to shrug off these feelings, and instead confront them.
